Section 3.9 Configuring HP ARPA Services 2.1/MS-DOS
(D1812B) and HP ARPA Services 2.1/MS-DOS for
NetWare (D1823A)
Introduction
This section explains how to order PC hardware and
software that will meet user needs for HP ARPA
Services 2.1/MS-DOS in HP LAN Manager
environments, in Novell NetWare environments and
in standalone environments.
With HP ARPA Services 2.1/MS-DOS and HP ARPA
Services 2.1/MS-DOS for NetWare, a PC running MS-
DOS can communicate in a multi-vendor environment
using the networking services defined by the
Department of Defense Advanced Research Project
Agency (ARPA) and Berkeley Software Distribution
(BSD) UNIX(R) system. ARPA services, like UNIX,
are defacto standards in the scientific and
engineering communities and are becoming much more
widespread in the commercial world. Both of these
products allow users to save money by leveraging
their investments and sharing resources and also
allows them to integrate DOS and UNIX systems.
With HP ARPA Services 2.1/MS-DOS for NetWare, a PC
running MS-DOS and NetWare can have all of the
functionality mentioned above and will not have to
reboot when moving between NetWare and HP ARPA
Services. These products support the DOS
environment as well as the new Windows 3.0 and 3.1
and HP NewWave 3.0 environments in all modes. The
NetIPC application program interface is supported
by HP ARPA Services 2.1/MS-DOS.
HP ARPA 2.1 services are not supported on OS/2 at
this time.
Summary
A DOS HP ARPA Services 2.1/MS-DOS or HP ARPA
Services 2.1/MS-DOS for NetWare client should be

Note (1): ARPA 2.1 code is shipped
on 1.2 MB discs - instructions are
provided which detail the process
for copying these discs onto 360KB
discs.
Note (2): Existing HP LAN Manager
1.0 networks must be upgraded to HP
LAN Manager 1.1.
Memory
DOS Clients running HP ARPA Services 2.1 or
HP ARPA Services 2.1 for NetWare only
(standalone)
HP recommends that DOS clients have 640 KB of
memory. This allows users to load DOS, the
networking software and to run most
applications. Less than 640 KB of memory
will not leave enough memory for most popular
applications.
DOS Clients running HP ARPA Services 2.1 or
HP ARPA Services 2.1 for NetWare and HP LAN
Manager
HP recommends that DOS clients running HP LAN
Manager 1.1 and HP ARPA Services 2.1 services
have a minimum of 640KB of memory. The 640KB
memory limit may be pressed when using
certain applications (such as HP NewWave
Office applications and Advancelink with
graphics). Customers who want to run these
kinds of large applications can do the
following:
* use EMS memory
* use the Demand Load feature to make
the HP ARPA Services 2.1 services
transient. (note: The Demand Load
feature is not supported in Windows 3.0
enhanced mode).
For DOS clients with 1MB or more of memory,
3rd party memory managers may be used to free
even more conventional (0-640 KB) memory for
applications.
Supported Terminal Emulators
HP ARPA Services 2.1/MS supports the
following terminal emulators:
Users must also have terminal emulation
software. They may choose from the following
terminal emulators:
HP AdvanceLink for DOS (68333F, 68333L)
HP AdvanceLink for Windows (D2104A,
D2114A, D2124A) (version
A.03.00 or later)
HP AdvanceLink for NewWave
or compatible third party product
The Kermit terminal emulator is included with
the product as a convenience to our users.
Kermit is a public domain VT 100 terminal
emulator that comes from Columbia University.
Since it is included with this product,
customers don't need to purchase another
terminal unless more features are needed.
Public domain programs are not supported by
HP.
